Let us have a Universal Mind that loves and protects all creation and helps all things grow and develop. To unify mind and body and become one with the Universe is the ultimate purpose of our study.

Master Koichi Tohei Sensei

Ki Aikido is a unique martial art focused on personal growth and overcoming life’s challenges with confidence and trust. Its foundation lies in the principles of mind-body unification, non-dissension, and refining the human spirit through techniques powered by Ki, rather than physical strength.

What is Ki?
Ki represents the universal energy that is our natural birthright—a vital life force within everyone. While Ki cannot be seen, touched, or smelled, it can be felt. Children naturally exchange Ki with the universe, but as we age, stress and fatigue often make this connection more difficult.

Benefits of Practicing Ki Aikido
Through Ki Aikido, people of all ages can learn to move in harmony, integrating mind and body as one. This state of unity enhances our potential and allows us to live more fulfilling lives. Practicing Ki Aikido helps us:
  • Build confidence and break negative habits.
  • Manage tension, conflicts, and challenges calmly.
  • Develop a positive and resilient mindset.
  • Trust our intuition and develop awareness.
  • Inspire and lead others effectively.
The Origins of Ki Aikido
In the 1920s, Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei) founded Aikido, meaning "The Art of Peace." One of his top students, Master Koichi Tohei, achieved 10th Dan and dedicated his life to sharing Aikido worldwide.
In 1974, Master Tohei founded the Ki Society (Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido Kai) to focus on the unification of mind and body, highlighting the practical use of Ki in both Aikido and daily life.
Since 2007, his son, Shinichi Tohei Sensei, has led the Ki Society, continuing to teach and evolve the art through seminars in Japan and internationally.

What Does a Class Look Like?
Each class begins with warm-up exercises focused on Ki development and Ki testing, designed by Master Koichi Tohei Sensei. These exercises deepen our understanding of Ki and its application in daily life. Occasionally, we include health exercises for natural body stretching and overall well-being.
We then progress to Aikido techniques practiced with mind-body coordination, concluding with restorative practices like:
  • Ki Breathing
  • Ki Meditation
  • Kiatsu
Principles for Mind-Body Coordination
We learn coordination of mind and body through exercises and by following four basic principles:
  1. Keep One Point – Focus your mind on the one point in your lower abdomen.
  2. Relax Completely – Release all tension from the mind and body.
  3. Keep Weight Underside – Let the weight of every part of your body rest naturally at its lowest point.
  4. Extend Ki – Allow energy to flow freely.
Aikido Principles
Our syllabus includes over 200 techniques (Kumi Waza, Ju Waza, and Taigi). However, the techniques are not the ultimate goal—they are tools to help us move with coordinated mind and body. If a technique fails, we revisit the foundational principles to refine our practice. We also follow the Five Aikido Principles with Mind and Body Unified:
  1. Extend Ki
  2. Know Your Partner's Mind
  3. Respect Your Partner's Ki
  4. Put Yourself in Your Partner’s Place
  5. Perform with Confidence and Trust

Mădălina Ogica

Hello! I am the founder of the Ki Aikido Basel Dojo and the head instructor. Thank you for your interest in Ki Aikido and our dojo. Looking forward to seeing you on the mat!

Cristian Huidan

Hola! As the second founder of the Ki Aikido Basel Dojo and Madalina's Sensei assistant and husband, I want to express my gratitude for your interest in Ki Aikido and our dojo. It would be wonderful to have you join us on the mat and train together!

Is it a violent practice? Are people really fighting?

No! We do not allow, nor encourage, any kind of violence during our classes! Violence is not part of our etiquette, nor in line with our mission & vision.

I’ve never done anything like this before. Can I attend the classes?

Absolutely!  Everyone is welcome, regardless of gender, nationality, or age. You can come and watch if you’re not comfortable attending yet. (Remember, that’s what I did!)

What clothing do I need to bring for the first time?

Something you can move freely in:  t-shirt, comfortable pants, and slippers.

What else do I need to know?

It's part of our practice to make sure that everyone is safe during the training. So we ask you to remove all the jewelry before coming to the mat.
